The second most popular Google search term after 'Campaign Cartographer 3' is 'Campaign Cartographer 3 torrent.' I'd like to appeal to those people considering a pirated copy to buy the software - since 2005 we've had a, and we urge you to try our and if you have any questions during that time. If you don't think the software represents value for money after that, just get your money back.Piratebay, demonoid and all those other seeders have CC3 on torrent. There isn't too much we can do about it, though we have got a few sites to pull down links, and got a few pirates to pay up. We aren't sure how much this affects our sales - I'm sure a lot of pirates wouldn't have bought our stuff anyway - but there are certainly those who have made the choice to steal rather than buy. I estimate that there are four pirated copies in use for every one sold.

CC3 and Perspectives A Campaign Cartographer 3/3+ Tutorial by Joachim de Ravenbel Part 1 - Basics. Select all the wall elements and right-click then choose do it. New entities are in orange for academic purpose only and will all turn purple later on.
These pirates aren't freedom fighters - most of them make money from advertising, and some even have the cheek to ask for donations.Piracy definitely decreased when we introduced CC3 - it pings our server automatically to validate the serial number on installation, or gets you to type in a code if you don't have internet access. However, we don't want to inconvenience our customers, so we rely on our reputation for technical support, and the excellence of our community to keep revenue flowing. CC3 is a relatively inexpensive piece of software, and even our Whole Shebang bundle, while a fair price, still represents excellent value for money compared with other similar commercial software. One other issue - on the CC3 torrent we downloaded, there was a very nasty Trojan virus. You get what you pay for.
You may actually find some of those torrents actually act as advertising for you. Some of those downloaders as you mention wont actually use it at all, while others will use it occasionally and then decide to buy it if they start using it more (or will have downloaded an older version, and then buy the latest).
![Examples Examples](http://www.funnyshapeddice.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/drakenhold_towers.png)
Quite a lot of downloaders of rpg stuff are actually 'archivers' btw - they just collect stuff for the sake of it and have massive collections of rpg related material nobody in a million years could ever use, but which they see (rightly or wrongly) as a form of saving material that may one day no longer be available. Its a complicated issue, full of many rights and wrongs and very few clear solutions alas. They key is often creating your own torrents where you can control or affect the nature of the product downloaded, rather than chasing the existing ones. I don't really find it that complicated, nor is it particularly grey. There is nothing morally redeeming about software piracy, even if their is a chance they might buy it. There isn't even the old excuse that it's 'evil micro$oft'. We are just a small niche software company, and piracy does hurt us.Software isn't the same as PDFs - occasionally people will by a hard copy, but it's very rare that anyone would buy the software - they have it in any case. I agree that there are few solutions.
It is the professional graphics, the improved user interface (for the specific purpose of game mapping design), and the user support that you are really paying for when you buy this sort of product. There are free alternatives you can use if you don't want this ease of use (many of which are clumsy to use or assume existing training in CAD to use properly), so there really is no justifiable need to resort to piracy. And having bought software for University architecture schools, I can definitely say that the price is extremely reasonable for what you get.PS: Are the technical requirements (minimum and recommended system specifications) on your website anywhere? I couldn't easily find them when I looked last time. Hello,I'd strongly encourage a demo for your products.
I delayed buying each of the products I have from you as I was hoping to see a demo and have a play around with them. I nearly didn't buy them as the price is high (for my part of the world) and I was unsure if I'd get the benefit from them. The demo would have helped ease my decision. Not being a programmer, I am unsure how feasible or easy it is for you to bash one up. Is it possible to prepare a demo that is fully working for a limited time, say 14 days, have each module but maybe a reduced symbol set.
That way it is one 'self-contained' demo showing off the power of your products. I'd even suggest having a registration process for the demo and watermarks. With regards to symbols. I'd like to see a different way of selling the brilliant symbols you guys produce.
For example, I have one of the symbol packs which contains a huge amount of artwork, but I would only use a fraction of the art. In my ideal world, I'd be able to buy a 'family' of symbols from your site (kind of like buying stock photos). When I say family, I mean a symbol with it's varicolour and optional orientaions or whatever. Again, not sure how feasible this is to implement, or if it is compatible with you business model.Anyway, thanks for the great products and the great support you guys have given me over the time I have been a customer - here's to the future. I recommanded CC3 and its addons to many friends and everybody who asked me about RPG and mapping tools. And I was always saying: 'It is the best product of this kind on the market. And it is absolutely woth the price.
If you don't have the money, there are many cheaper subagents, like Dungeon Crafter or AutoREALM.' I bought CC3 and I don't regret it at all.
Support from ProFantasy is excelent and above all I've known so far. I am happy I could support ProFantasy and CC3 with my money. So, please don't steal this software!P.S. Maybe I souldn't say it but I was a pirate some time before. I didn't see the point to pay for software when I could download it free. However, just ProFantasy learned me to see the point.
I learned there is software and kind companies like ProFantasy which worth the money and respect at all. I shall remain incognito, but you may call me Blackbeard. I believe you are smart enough to discern the nature of my anonymity, but I come to shed light on something you may not realize. Please hear me out. Parley as it were.I am a somewhat recent college graduate still looking for employment in today's struggling economy. I have no money, but don't go crying on my account. I have not tried to make money with your product, in fact, I have barely had time to try it out (a 14-day money back guarantee doesn't do well when you only get a hand full of hours a week to try to make a project that can take many hours).
However, in the video tutorials and in spending a few hours fiddling with it, I have come to the conclusion that it is indeed a very fine product, and I congratulate you for it. I will have a job soon, and I am 90% sure I will buy this program, but if for some unseen reason I cannot or do not buy it when I have the means to do so, I will delete it from my system. Now you might still be wondering why I have even bothered to write a response (and even risked exposure if you have means to track an IP address). I wish to explain the reasoning for my actions:Without money, I would never have purchased the product in the first place.
Therefore you have not lost money due to my actions; you simply have someone using your program without permission. You might say 'well that's reason enough', but had no one been able to buy your product, you wouldn't have ever made it (or at least not to such an extent). However, this does NOT justify my actions.yet.So what would justify my actions? Well considering that this product has a one time purchase (considering upgrades as sequential one-time purchases) and that one time purchase allows the product to be used forever, would that not also extend backward in time?My argument is that I would not have been able to buy the software anyway, however, once I get the means to buy it, I will, which will cover my trespass thus far. If I had no intention of buying it, I would have either never downloaded it, or once I had figured out that the program does not meet my needs/desires, then I would have deleted it. As it is, I do like your product, and I do plan to buy it.Recap: You have lost no business from me, but in fact, will gain it shortly.
Now I cannot justify the actions of everyone, nor can I say my actions are completely justified. There are those who just want the thrill of having stockpiles of multimedia that they will never peruse. Like many pirates out there, that is not what I do. You will lose business due to torrents, but you will gain it as well. I must say, while I understand the reason for your pricing is probably due to being an indie company, the prices are pretty scary. And again, the 14 day trial is not good enough for some (might I suggest something like 24 hours of actual use instead?) Also, I have become interested in some of your other programs.
Well unlike the above my anonymity is caused by not having a login in OpenID or Livejournal and since i seen no need for either of those why take the time to do so. With that regard My names Yehlan and if its a matter of contact heres my email [email protected] there no longer anonymous.Currently im looking into the world builder package as ive been a DM of D&D for about 18 years and am currently building my own world to the same extent that forgotten realms or dragonlance has been created which is a massive project on my part with the help of a few others. I unlike college students or alot of others who play these types of games have no money concerns im able to drop hundreds and even thousands of dollars on products at a drop of a hat. But that doesnt mean im anymore likely of buying your product than they are.I also will admit i pirate not because i consider myself a thief but because the quality of products be it multimedia like movies and music or software like your own seems to be extremely lacking in quality.
Im the type of person who used to goto movie theatres to see any movie i thought had a good trailer now your lucky if i even consider going to the cheap theatre as even that feels like a waste when the movie ends. When a new movie comes out i download it then if i enjoyed it i always buy it as i also tend to enjoy the extras and commentarys. The same rules now applies to programs if i enjoy your program ill always buy it to get the extras like tech support and free updates.Recently i decided that instead of reading out NPC story text during my games i would get a voice altering program and use that to record my voice and alter it in a style to sound how i wanted the character to sound. After much testing with the demo i couldnt get it to work as i wanted but after reading what the demo was lacking i was essentially told the functions i needed to complete my project was only available in the full version. This being something special i wanted to introduce into my games i spent the $100 on the program and quickly found out that the promised function was nothing like was promised so upon my attempt to return the program with there 14 day return guarantee i was stonewalled by fine print that of course was on an obscure pay nowhere near the 'i agree to these terms' button nor in the agreed terms i was stuck with a program i now have no use for.I appologize for taking so long to make my point but here it is now. Your demo may or may not give me enough use to merrit your price tag which is rather steep considering how many addons you seem to feel are required. But if i feel the demo doesnt warrent your price tag i will be looking for a torrent to test out your CC3 and if i find that program to meet or better yet exceed my hopes youll have my money for not only the CC3 but for at the minimum your world builder package and possibly some others at a later date. Some companys have taken to releaseing full version of there software with a # of uses function meaning for your next 10-20 uses you get full function of the software after that it turns into a restricted use.
One idea you may want to consider is just that but have it built into your software that anything printed or saved is saved or printed with a banner of your companys name across the entire width as to reduce the programs worth to people who are not just attempting to see how it works. I know as a consumer i want to know the program does what i need it to and as a consumer i should get to know what im buying but as a company you should also be able to limit how much benefit i can actually get from it. Before i buy a car i get to test drive it and use it as i would if i owned in regards to finction within the vehicle. But i dont get to go do my grocerys or use it to go on a road trip.Once again i appologize for my long windedness but i tend to have too many thoughts and have a penchant to get them all out on a subject. But do expect that in the near future i will more than likely be purchasing this software and if i dont its because it didnt meet my needs and im looking elsewhere, not that ill be using it for free.
I'll preface my comment by saying this: I don't support piracy, and I have not and will not engage in it. That said.I'm normally a big believer of respecting difference in opinion, so I very rarely say this, but.'
CC3 is a relatively inexpensive piece of software'You're wrong. CC3 is OBSCENELY overpriced for what it is. I've tried the trial, and it's a very nice piece of software.
But not that nice. I've tried several of your competator's trials as well, and y'know what? CC3 IS the best out there, by a fair margin. But at $150 (Considering that bundle includes the bare minimum of what ought to be included by default), I just can't justify the purchase. And quite frankly, the $610 bundle is just insulting. I can't see any purpose for it other then to make the other bundles seem reasonable by comparison, and honestly, I'd like to think most of us are smarter then that. It may well be unjustifiable for you, but it's plainly not overpriced - it's at a price that is not worth it or is unaffordable for you; that's very different.CC3 alone is more than capable of creating any type of map. The add-ons allow you to do other maps more quickly, and offer more resources.
I agree that it is the best, and the core CAD engine on its own is $600(FastCAD) and that is without any specialist map-making capability. We offer a range of options to cope with every budget - the more you spend, the quicker, easier, and more attractive your maps become. We are offering a specialist product for a specialist market. We offer our entire range of software at bundle discounts, and it's not just there for comparison - people buy them. The full range includes hundreds of pregen maps, thousands and thousands of symbols and many, many map-making styles. We needn't offer it, but it is there for people who want it, and they do.
A decent proportion of our userbase (those on a budget) make use of CC3 alone and make use of the vast range of free map-making content available online, such as the CSUAC. I saw your site, was very interested in trying the product, and so typed in 'Campaign Cartographer Torrent' into my search bar. Yours was the second hit that came up.After reading your article and many of the comments, I was touched, and made up my mind to support your company by buying it.Then, I read the preceding two comments regarding the price of the product, went back to your site, and sure enough, the software is far and away out of my price range. You have made me feel guilty enough not to torrent this. But did that just make a sale? Instead, I will probably try to put something together myself in my copy of Photoshop 5.0 LE.The funny thing? I seem to recall this as not being the first time this has happened.

I think I faced the same dilemma back when considering whether to buy CC2. Your high price has scared me away twice, and your 'small business owner' position keeps me from being able to justify torrenting it. =PI almost wonder; if you sell it for half the current price, how many more people would be able to sell to? I'd imagine that despite your high startup cost, your marginal cost is probably pretty low. How much money does it take, per person, to send them a download, anyways?.
Same anonymous person here who complained last comment. If I understand correctly, your target audience isn't the casual gamer, it's the professionals who create adventures and publish them. That's why your software is so expensive, right? You aren't selling to people like us. You're selling to gaming companies, and so the casual gamers have to use the gaming company prices. What if you were to have a 'home use' version and a 'professional' version, at differing prices? The home use version would have a stipulation in the EULA saying that you cannot sell the maps you make, and the professional version would have no such limitations. Then, you can continue to make a large profit in your target market while opening up a new market segment for the casual gamers.I'm sure your company has a bunch of smart people at the helm, and I'm guessing you've already explored ideas like this in the past. Perhaps you could explain why you chose to price your software where you did?
I'm curious as to what info I'm missing. At first I was looking to buy CC3 until I saw that it is broken up into many small packages that you must buy individually to have the complete map making program.Seriously, I don't want to pay 45 bucks for (Bare bones) map making software only to find out that I need to buy a fantasy overland package for another 35 bucks, another 35 bucks for a sufficient number of objects to create decent temples and tombs, another 30 bucks for a dungeon package, another 25 bucks to have a decent library of symbols, etc. You get my drift here. This kind of nickle and dime strategy you are using with your customers is what made me think of Pirating in the first place (though I did not end up doing so).If you want my money, release a solid piece of map making software and then update and support it well - don't make me keep paying to have options that should have been there in the first place. I understand your frustration over people stealing your work, but if you price the work out of the realm of what is reasonable to pay.The argument that the Cad software costs 600 bucks on its own is simply preposterous. We are not buying a cad package - we are buying a tool to make maps for a GAME, not a tool to create DANG NEAR ANYTHING in 3D!
That is the tool that YOU bought and we are NOT getting that kind of functionality. Your argument is like saying, 'Oh, you want to buy this shiny new game we made?
Well, the game engine costs hundreds of dollars, so we're going to jack up the price of the game as well - since you can make your own maps in it, it's basically the same thing, right?' Ridiculous.I would be happy to purchase your product ONCE, but I am not going to pay again and again for pieces of an incomplete tool to use in support of the real game. And, I certainly wont spend more on those packages than I would spend on a game! Heck, brand new releases of the hottest computer games (which I'm using as a comparison since you are selling game software, though admittedly of a different kind) rarely go for over 50 BUCKS, and that is a complete game, not just a tool to support a game!Yes, I have the option of buying a basic package without buying all the extra packages that fill the map out nicely, but I would prefer to buy from a company that sells me a whole piece of software and then makes an effort to update and support it, vs.
A company who sells a stripped down package and then offers the rest of the tools for individual purchase when they should have been included in the first place. I would be happy to pay 50 or 60 bucks for such a complete tool(vs the $150+ from your nickle and dime business model), and I'm sure that there are others who would pay even more.We all agree that Pirates are here for the duration, like it or not, just as they have been here in one form or another for all of human history. You cannot change that. What you CAN change is your business practices. You create a good product, but I think some rethinking of your pricing structure is in order. CC3 is not stripped down. It is a fully featured CAD package, designed specifically for game map making.
It has the capability and symbols to draw any kind of fantasy maps, and with the huge free symbol resources available, you do not have to buy our add-ons. You don't have to have additional map-making styles and symbols, notr get prepackaged atlases.
We are not selling a game, we are selling a powerful tool. You can play D&D with just the player's handbook and DM's guide. You don't add up the price of the entire range of all their D&D supplements and say '$400 for a roleplaying game! That's ridicuous!'
What you are saying is the cry of potential customers throughout history, 'we want more of your stuff, cheaper.' I can't say I blame you, but it's not a realistic business model for us. I am a student in university, and admittedly I do not have very much extra money to spend on anything, let alone a tool (albeit powerful and very useful) to help me with a game. If it was a $50 purchase one time with DD and CD included i would find the money somewhere, maybe skip a meal here or there, but as it stands right now, as a nickel and dime scheme (to me that is indeed what it is), i have no interest in it. I do not feel the need to purchase something, and continually have to pay for updates and extra packages that should be a part of it.
Overland maps are useful to me and my gaming, but i would much rather have detailed dungeon maps over an overland map. And seeing as how DD needs CC3 to run, there;s me paying for two programs to use one of them. Not to say I wouldn't use CC3, because I would, but I don't see why I should have to buy two.I will admit to pirating some things. I download music to get a taste of what the artist sounds like.
Not just the one single I hear all over the radio, but the songs not heard. If they are good i may buy the album, if not, I wont. They aren't loosing money because I wouldn't buy it without hearing what they sound like in the first place, and thus if i decide i like them BECAUSE i downloaded something of theirs, then they GAIN a customer. In the sense of CC3, if I could find a torrent for it, I would more likely then not download it to see what all CC3 could do by itself (again being in university leaves me with little time in 14 days to work with), and if indeed it is as good as I hear, I might buy it. I might also think that I would need to have CD and DD, and that is all well and good, but I can promise you that I definitely won't purchase them, because they should be a part of CC3 in the first place. You are selling only part of the tool.
If you want to hammer a nail, do you buy the shaft and head separately? No, you get the full thing. You should have a package that includes both CD and DD, which would be a complete map making tool, and sell it for around $80 - $90.
If CC3 itself is worth $45, in your opinion, and both CD and DD are worth $40 each, how much would it cost to drop $15 from CD and DD to gain the extra income from customers that don't feel the need to buy them all. Either that or make CD and DD stand alone applications that don't need CC3 to run.this is just my opinion, but in closing, I need an application that is both useful and within a reasonable price range. Your product doesn't fit both categories, and so until it does.AARGH!. I actually almost got arrested at age 15 for stealing ADND Core Rules 2.0. The price tag was $70 bucks. So being 15 and not working I swiped it. Long story short, I burnt it and like 4 copies were floating around until I got narced on and had to return the game and clean the store so the guy wouldn't press charges.
The program wasn't worth $70 bucks.I own CC3 and CD3 both. I'm sorry, but for what they come with, they aren't worth the price. I've since purchased the 2008 Annual and plan on purchasing 2009 and Dungeon Designer, but that is another 80 plus dollars. So in total I will have paid around $200 for a program and addons that I still fully don't understand how to operate. I've found myself searching the internet for symbols and other things to possibly make it better without investing more money into maybes. The program is sometimes glitchy, has an illogical UI, but I was impressed with what I saw from the demo maps.
So I bought the programs and have been somewhat disappointed. Now I'm getting better at them and have been able to tweak them to the point to where I get satisfactory results. Still keeping track of what sheet / layer I'm on and then clicking a button to do something on those same sheets / layers and it changing sheets and then trying to get explode or trim to entity to work and it hardly ever does. The program is very tempermental when it comes to doing things a certain way and is what hurts you the most.It is a complicated program that can do amazing things, but in order to do that you have to spend more and more and learn this and develop that or this yourself. For an overland map making program for everyday use which is what I think most people want out of your software, it's over-complicated and over-priced.I would suggest offering CC3 free to the public, with no add ons and only one decent overland style and matching symbols. Then, charge if they want to unlock the program and gain access to more styles and symbols.
The annuals and symbol sets are ridiculous, really. I'd suggest a more open source type community that people can contribute to but with the same deal.
Monthly charge or something. The reason I haven't bought the other annual is because I only want it for one thing. The Fantasy Realms overland style.
Is that one thing worth the price of the whole package? Would I buy it stand alone for the 1/12th the cost of the Annual 2009 package? In a heart beat.I just think you guys need multiple options when it comes to merchandise sales. Not everyone brings in 70k plus a year and can afford your prices but they still want your software. Maybe not for everything that it can do, maybe like me, they only want one or two aspects of an annual, or symbol set.
Why not offer that? Maybe they want a bare bones map program and are fine with a free download but end up liking more of what they see and can do? They can't throw 80 bucks at an annual set and symbol set, but they can throw 20 bucks for a few symbols and an overland style.Just something to think about.
